When most people think of Menorca, they picture turquoise coves, golden sunsets and long lunches overlooking the Mediterranean.

I do too.

But when I think of Menorca,

I think of the moment I took my first breath underwater.

A moment that would lead me down a path I could never have imagined.

What started as curiosity became a passion. What began as a holiday activity became a defining part of my life. And what started with a dive centre in Cala Galdana eventually gave me some of the most extraordinary experiences I have ever had.

Taking The First Plunge

Before scuba diving, the underwater world felt mysterious.

I had spent years travelling the world, exploring coastlines and admiring the sea from the surface, staying in my favourite hotel on the Island which you can read about here, but I had never experienced what lay beneath it.

That changed in Cala Galdana.

I enrolled on my SSI Open Water Diver course with Blue Islands Diving, a family-run dive centre nestled beside one of Menorca’s most beautiful bays.

Like many beginners, I felt a mixture of excitement and nerves.

Breathing underwater feels completely unnatural at first. Every instinct tells you it shouldn’t be possible. Yet within minutes, something remarkable happens.

The anxiety fades.

The noise disappears.

The world slows down.

And suddenly you’re floating weightlessly in an entirely different environment.

I was hooked.

The Start Of A New Obsession

Many people complete a diving course and tick it off their bucket list.

I wasn’t one of them.

The more I dived, the more I wanted to learn.

Every trip to Menorca became an opportunity to develop new skills, explore new sites and gain a deeper understanding of the underwater world.

What began as an occasional holiday activity soon became the reason I booked flights.

Over the years, I returned again and again.

Open Water became Advanced Open Water.

Advanced led to additional speciality certifications.

Deep diving.

Navigation.

Night diving.

Perfect buoyancy.

Wreck diving.

Every course opened another door.

Each qualification revealed another layer of a world that few people ever get to experience.

Eventually, after countless dives, training courses and underwater adventures, I achieved SSI Master Diver status.

The certification itself was rewarding, but what mattered more was the journey it represented.

Thousands of moments beneath the surface.

Hundreds of lessons learned.

A lifetime of memories.

Solo Trips, Shared Adventures

Many of these trips began alone.

I would board a flight to Menorca with little more than a suitcase and my dive gear.

Some people find solo travel intimidating.

I’ve always found it liberating.

Those journeys gave me the freedom to focus entirely on diving, learning and exploring.

Yet despite travelling alone, I was never truly by myself for long.

The dive centre quickly became a second home.

The familiar faces waiting on the boat each morning made every return feel less like a holiday and more like coming back to family.

The People Who Made The Difference

Every diver remembers the instructors who helped shape their journey.

For me, that journey would not have been the same without Pietro and Enza owners of Blue Islands Diving and Roberto who is one of the most skilled Scuba Divers I have ever met and also my Dive Buddy.

What began as a professional relationship gradually evolved into friendship.

Their passion for diving is infectious. Their knowledge of Menorca’s waters is extraordinary. More importantly, they genuinely care about the people who walk through their doors.

Over the years they have guided me through courses, encouraged my development and shared countless unforgettable dives.

Roberto.

Every diver knows the value of a great dive buddy.

Trust is everything underwater.

Roberto is the kind of dive buddy every diver hopes to find.

Calm, dependable, knowledgeable and always enjoyable to dive alongside.

Some of my favourite underwater memories have been shared with him.

Today, we dive not as instructor and student, but as friends exploring a world we all love.

The Cathedral Beneath The Sea

Among all the sites I have explored, one stands above almost every other.

Cueva de la Luz.

The Cave of Light.

Describing this dive never feels adequate.

You descend through crystal-clear water before entering a cavern where shafts of sunlight pierce through openings in the rock above.

The effect is mesmerising.

Beams of blue light dance through the darkness, creating an atmosphere that feels almost spiritual.

The cave resembles an underwater cathedral.

Silent.

Ancient.

Beautiful.

No matter how many times I dive there, it never loses its magic.

My Favourite Dive In Menorca

If I had to choose a single dive site above all others, it would be the wreck of the Malakoff.

Resting beneath the waters off Cala Galdana, the French cargo vessel has become one of my favourite places to visit underwater.

There is something fascinating about wreck diving.

Ships that once crossed oceans now rest quietly beneath the waves, gradually becoming part of the marine environment.

Schools of fish weave through the structure.

Marine life claims every surface.

History and nature merge into something completely unique.

Each visit reveals something new.

Every descent feels like returning to an old friend.

Swiss Cheese And Menorca’s Underwater Playground

One of the reasons I continue returning to Menorca is the incredible variety of diving available around the island.

Swiss Cheese remains one of the most entertaining dive sites, with its maze-like network of holes, tunnels and rock formations creating a playground for divers to explore.

The island’s dramatic geology has created an underwater landscape unlike anywhere else I’ve dived.

Every site offers something different.

Caves.

Canyons.

Drop-offs.

Reefs.

Wrecks.

The diversity is extraordinary.

Whether diving around Fornells in the north or exploring the dramatic coastline near Cala en Forcat, there is always another adventure waiting beneath the surface.

What Diving Has Taught Me

People often ask why I love diving so much.

The answer isn’t simply the marine life.

It isn’t the wrecks.

It isn’t the caves.

It’s what happens to your mind underwater.

The world disappears.

Emails don’t matter.

Deadlines don’t matter.

Stress doesn’t matter.

Your focus narrows to the present moment.

Each breath.

Each movement.

Each observation.

In a world that constantly encourages us to rush, diving forces you to slow down.

Perhaps that’s why I fell in love with it.

More Than A Hobby

Looking back, it’s incredible to think how much of my life changed because I decided to try a scuba diving course in Menorca.

What began as a single lesson became a passion.

That passion led to qualifications, friendships, adventures and experiences I could never have imagined.

I’ve explored caves illuminated by sunlight.

I’ve visited shipwrecks hidden beneath the sea.

I’ve drifted through underwater landscapes that most people will never see.

Most importantly, I’ve met people who have become genuine friends.

For that, I will always be grateful.

Whenever I return to Menorca, I still feel the same excitement I felt before my very first dive.

Because beneath the island’s beautiful surface lies a second world.

A world that changed my life.

And I can’t wait to keep exploring it. Discover why I keep returning to Menorca right here.
