Some hotels are memorable because of their luxury. Others because of their location.
The DoubleTree by Hilton Leeds City Centre has earned a place among my favourite UK weekend stays for an entirely different reason: it simply gets the balance right.
Leeds is one of those cities that seems to surprise people. Vibrant without being overwhelming, energetic without losing its friendliness, it offers the perfect setting for a weekend escape. While I’ll be covering the city itself in a future destination guide, finding the right base is essential, and this is where the DoubleTree excels.
Situated alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, the hotel occupies a convenient position within easy walking distance of the city’s shops, restaurants and nightlife. Yet despite its central location, it manages to feel slightly removed from the bustle below.
The hotel naturally attracts a significant business clientele, and this influence can be seen throughout the property. The design is modern, practical and efficient rather than overtly luxurious. However, what it lacks in extravagance, it more than makes up for in comfort.
The rooms are spacious, well-appointed and designed with functionality in mind. Comfortable queen-sized beds provide an excellent night’s sleep, while the large 65-inch televisions add a welcome touch of indulgence after a day exploring the city. Everything feels thoughtfully considered, creating a space that works equally well for a business trip or a leisurely weekend break.
What truly elevates the experience, however, is the staff.
Hospitality is often defined by small interactions, and the team here consistently deliver a warm, professional service that makes guests feel genuinely welcome. Whether arriving for a short stay or returning for another visit, there is a sense that the hotel understands the importance of making people feel looked after.
But if there is one reason I continue returning, it lies many floors above the reception desk.
Sky Lounge.
Perched on the rooftop, this is still one of my favourite hotel bars in the United Kingdom.
As the city stretches out beneath you, Leeds takes on a different character. The skyline, church spires, modern developments and distant Yorkshire landscape combine to create a view that feels far grander than many visitors expect. During daylight hours it’s impressive. As evening arrives and the city lights begin to glow, it becomes something rather special.
It’s the sort of place where a quick drink easily turns into an entire evening.
Few hotel bars successfully become destinations in their own right. Sky Lounge achieves exactly that.
The combination of panoramic views, relaxed atmosphere and excellent setting creates an experience that rivals rooftop venues in cities far larger than Leeds. For guests staying at the hotel, having it quite literally on your doorstep feels like a luxury in itself.
The DoubleTree by Hilton Leeds City Centre may not be the most extravagant hotel in Yorkshire, nor does it try to be. Instead, it focuses on delivering comfort, consistency and genuine hospitality in a superb location.
Most importantly, it possesses something many hotels spend years trying to create: a reason to return.
For me, that reason is simple.
A comfortable room, a welcoming city and one of the loveliest rooftop bar views in Britain.
