When discussing great wine regions, most people immediately think of France, Italy or perhaps Spain.

England rarely gets invited to that conversation.

After visiting Rathfinny Wine Estate in the rolling South Downs of Sussex, I think that may be a mistake. A rather huge mistake.

Set amongst immaculate vineyards and surrounded by some of England’s most beautiful countryside, Rathfinny has quietly established itself as one of the country’s premier sparkling wine producers. More importantly, it offers a visitor experience that combines exceptional wine, stunning scenery and just enough temptation to ensure you leave carrying considerably more bottles than you intended.

Purely for research purposes, of course.

First Impressions

The approach to Rathfinny immediately sets the tone.

The South Downs unfold around you in every direction, with rows of perfectly maintained vines stretching across the landscape. Everything feels remarkably well kept, from the vineyard itself to the visitor facilities.

There is a sense of quiet confidence here.

Rathfinny isn’t trying to convince you that English wine can compete with the world’s best sparkling wines.

It simply invites you to taste them and decide for yourself.

The estate itself is beautiful. Elegant without being pretentious, modern without losing its connection to the countryside.

It’s exactly the sort of setting where you can happily lose an afternoon.

The Vineyard Tour

The tour provides a fascinating insight into the estate’s history, philosophy and wine-making process.

Visitors are guided through the vineyards while learning how the unique chalk soils of the South Downs mirror those found across the English Channel in Champagne.

The attention to detail throughout the estate is immediately obvious.

Rows of vines appear almost military in their precision. Equipment is immaculate. Facilities are spotless.

As someone who appreciates places that take pride in what they do, I found this incredibly impressive.

Every aspect of the operation feels meticulously planned and expertly executed.

The guides are knowledgeable without overwhelming guests with technical jargon, striking a perfect balance between education and enjoyment.

Even those with little previous interest in wine will leave knowing far more than when they arrived.

The Wines

The highlight of the experience comes at the end of the tour.

The tasting.

And thankfully, Rathfinny doesn’t believe in doing things by halves.

Guests are invited to sample a generous selection of the estate’s wines, providing an excellent overview of what makes Rathfinny so highly regarded.

The still wines are enjoyable, but it is the sparkling collection that truly steals the show.

Produced using the traditional method, these wines display remarkable finesse and quality.

Expect notes of green apple, citrus peel and orchard fruits, supported by delicate brioche characteristics developed during extended ageing.

The bubbles are elegant and persistent, while the acidity provides freshness and balance.

In short, these are serious wines.

My personal favourite was their sparkling white.

From the first sip, it was clear why English sparkling wine has earned such a strong international reputation in recent years.

Fresh citrus, crisp apple and subtle toasted notes combined beautifully, creating a wine that was both refreshing and complex.

The sort of bottle that disappears with surprising speed while you’re busy insisting you’re only having “one more small glass.”

Several glasses later, I found myself conducting increasingly sophisticated tasting notes.

They began with:

“Wonderful balance and complexity.”

Before eventually evolving into:

“That’s absolutely delicious.”

Which, if we’re being honest, is usually the most important tasting note of all.

The Setting

One of Rathfinny’s greatest strengths is its location.

The South Downs provide a stunning backdrop throughout the visit, with panoramic views that seem to stretch endlessly across the Sussex countryside.

There is something wonderfully peaceful about sitting amongst the vineyards with a glass of sparkling wine in hand while looking out across the rolling hills.

It feels distinctly British.

And surprisingly sophisticated.

If someone had blindfolded me and placed a glass of Rathfinny sparkling wine in my hand while I gazed across the vines, I could easily have believed I was somewhere in northern France.

Until it started raining, of course.

Food and Hospitality

The hospitality throughout the estate is excellent.

Staff are warm, welcoming and clearly passionate about both the wines and the estate itself.

The visitor experience feels carefully considered from start to finish, creating an atmosphere that encourages guests to relax, explore and enjoy themselves.

As with all good vineyard visits, there comes a point where your judgement regarding how many bottles you actually need begins to soften considerably.

I arrived with every intention of exercising restraint.

The wine shop had other ideas.

Would I Return?

Absolutely.

Rathfinny is far more than simply a vineyard tour.

It is a celebration of how far English wine has come and a reminder that world-class sparkling wine doesn’t always need a French postcode.

The combination of stunning scenery, immaculate facilities, knowledgeable guides and exceptional wines makes for a genuinely memorable experience.

Whether you’re a dedicated wine enthusiast or simply looking for an enjoyable day out in the Sussex countryside, Rathfinny deserves a place on your itinerary.

Just don’t be surprised if you leave with a boot full of sparkling wine and a newfound appreciation for English vineyards.

Trust me.

There are far worse souvenirs.
